How to start a blog for your business

A business blog exists to bring in people from Google who have a question related to what you sell, and turn some of them into clients. To start one you need a platform (usually WordPress, inside your own website), a list of topics based on real searches and the discipline to publish regularly.

In short

  • Keep the blog on your own website (yourbusiness.es/blog), not on a separate domain.
  • WordPress is the usual choice; free platforms are fine for testing the waters.
  • Pick topics from what your clients search for, not just what you feel like writing.
  • Every post should point the reader to a service or a way to get in touch.

What a business blog is for

Service pages answer people who already want to hire someone. A blog answers people who are still researching: "how long does a bathroom renovation take", "do I need a gestor as an autónomo", "how to choose a mattress". If your article answers that question well and links to your service, some of those readers will end up contacting you. Useful content also attracts links from other websites, which strengthens your whole domain.

Where to host your blog

If your site already runs on WordPress, the blog is built in: create a page called "Blog", set it as the posts page under Settings → Reading and start writing from Posts → Add New. New to the tool? Start with what is WordPress.

How to choose your topics

  1. Write down the questions clients ask you on the phone, in person or by email. Every question you hear twice is an article.
  2. Check how many people search for it with a keyword tool. We explain how in keyword research.
  3. Drop topics already covered by a service page: if your blog and your service compete for the same search, they hold each other back.
  4. Group topics into categories and start with the ones closest to a sale.

How to write a post that ranks

  • Answer first: the opening sentence should answer the question in the title.
  • Use clear subheadings people can scan, plus lists and tables where they help.
  • Add something of your own: experience, real examples, ballpark prices, photos of your work.
  • Link to the related service and to other posts on your blog.
  • Write a title and description that make people want to click in Google.
  • Finish with FAQs, answered briefly.

How often to publish

One good article a month for a year beats ten in one week and then silence. For a small business, two to four posts a month is a sustainable pace and enough to see results within a few months. Revisit older posts too: updating an article that already gets visits often pays off more than writing a new one.

Turning readers into clients

  • A block at the end of each post with the related service and a clear button.
  • Links inside the text at the moment the reader needs help.
  • A download or a free consultation in exchange for an email address, if your sales cycle is long.
  • Tracking in Google Search Console and Analytics which posts bring visits and which bring enquiries.

FAQ

How can I start a blog for free?

With platforms such as WordPress.com or Blogger. They are fine for testing, but the blog sits on someone else's subdomain and does nothing for your business website's rankings.

Is blogging still worth it for SEO?

Yes, as long as posts answer real searches and add something original. Generic or copied content is what has stopped working.

How long does a blog take to bring in traffic?

Usually three to six months before you notice it, longer for competitive topics. Consistency is what makes the difference.

Can I use AI to write my blog?

It can help with drafts and structure, but someone who knows the subject should review the final text and add real experience. Google rewards helpful content, whoever writes it.
